The Best Form Builder for Tutors: An Honest Comparison

What tutors actually need from an online form builder, and a fair look at four popular options: Google Forms, Tally, Jotform and Bear Forms, including where each one is the better choice.

Updated October 31, 2026 · 7 minute read

Tutors use forms for the same handful of jobs: signing up new students, collecting homework, getting families to agree to policies and asking for feedback. Almost any form builder can do these, so the right choice comes down to price, how easy it is for parents on a phone, and how much setup you want to do.

We make Bear Forms, so we're not neutral. We've tried to be fair: competitor facts below come from their own websites, are linked, and were checked in October 2026. Prices and features change, so check the links before you decide.

What tutors need from a form builder

  • Easy for parents on a phone. Most families open your link on their phone, often in a hurry.
  • File uploads without friction. Homework photos, report cards and writing samples are common.
  • Multi-step forms. Intake forms have a lot of questions; short steps make them easier to finish.
  • An alert when someone responds. A fast reply is how you win new families.
  • Sensible price. Most tutors are solo businesses, and forms are a small part of the job.
  • Ready-made questions. Starting from a tutoring template saves time and forgotten questions.

Competitor details as of October 2026, from Google Forms, Google's file upload help, Tally pricing and Jotform pricing.

Google Forms

Google Forms is free with a Google account, and if you already use Gmail and Google Drive, it's the quickest way to make a form. For many tutors it's where they start, and for simple sign-up sheets and quizzes it does the job well.

The main thing to know for tutoring is file uploads. According to Google's own help page, people need to sign in to a Google Account to answer a file upload question, and uploaded files are saved to a folder in your Google Drive. That's fine for students with school Google accounts, but some parents won't have one, or won't want to sign in. Uploads also count toward your Google storage, which is up to 15 GB shared with Gmail and Google Photos.

Best for: tutors who want a free tool, already work in Google Drive, and mostly collect text answers.

Tally

Tally has one of the most generous free plans of any form builder: unlimited forms and submissions within its fair-use guidelines, plus features like conditional logic, payments, signatures and integrations with tools such as Google Sheets and Zapier. If you want those features without paying, Tally is hard to beat.

On the free plan, forms show Tally branding and file uploads are limited to 10 MB per file. Pro, at $24 a month billed monthly, removes the branding and the upload limit and adds custom domains and team features.

Best for: tutors who want a powerful free tool and are happy to spend some time setting it up, or who need payments or integrations.

Jotform

Jotform is a large form builder with a very wide range of features. Its free Starter plan includes 5 forms, 100 submissions a month and 100 MB of upload space, with Jotform branding on forms.

Paid plans start with Bronze at $39 a month billed monthly, or $34 a month billed yearly, for 25 forms, 1,000 submissions a month and 1 GB of upload space, with removable branding. Higher plans raise the limits.

Best for: tutoring businesses that need advanced features, like payments and signed documents, and don't mind the higher price.

Bear Forms

Bear Forms is a simple form builder for tutors. It does fewer things than Tally or Jotform on purpose: a drag-and-drop builder with 12 question types, multi-step forms with a progress bar, file uploads, spam protection without puzzles, an email alert for each response, a responses table and CSV export. Forms are shared as a link or embedded on your website with two lines of code, and they fit phones.

It comes with 38 ready-made templates written for tutors, music teachers, ESL tutors and tutoring agencies, from tutoring registration to homework submission. Parents don't need an account or a sign-in to fill in a form or upload a file.

There's no free plan. Solo is $4 a month, or $32 a year, for up to 30 forms and 1,000 responses a month, and Pro is $15 a month, or $144 a year, for unlimited forms and responses. You can try the builder at bearforms.com/demo without signing up, and the first payment has a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Bear Forms doesn't take payments, collect e-signatures or connect to other apps. If you need any of those, Tally or Jotform will suit you better.

Best for: tutors who want ready-made tutoring forms, a simple builder and a low monthly price, without branding on their forms.

Which one should you choose?

  • You want free and already use Google: start with Google Forms.
  • You want free with advanced features, or need payments or integrations: look at Tally.
  • You run a larger business and need the widest feature set: look at Jotform.
  • You want tutoring templates, simple setup and a low price: try Bear Forms.

Whichever you choose, the forms themselves matter more than the tool. Our guide to onboarding new tutoring students covers which forms to send and when.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free form builder for tutors?

Google Forms and Tally both have free plans that work for tutors. Google Forms is free with a Google account and is simplest if you already use Google Drive. Tally's free plan includes unlimited forms and submissions within its fair-use guidelines, plus features like conditional logic. Bear Forms has no free plan.

Is Google Forms good enough for tutoring?

For many tutors, yes, especially for simple sign-ups and quizzes. The main limitation is file uploads: Google's help page says respondents must sign in to a Google Account to answer a file upload question, which some parents won't want to do.

How much does Bear Forms cost compared to Jotform and Tally?

As of October 2026, Bear Forms Solo is $4 a month, Tally Pro is $24 a month billed monthly, and Jotform Bronze is $39 a month billed monthly or $34 a month billed yearly. Tally and Jotform also have free plans; Bear Forms doesn't, but offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Which form builder is best for taking payments?

Tally and Jotform both list payment collection on their pricing pages. Bear Forms doesn't take payments, so if you want families to pay through the form, one of those is a better fit.

Do parents need an account to fill in a Bear Forms form?

No. Parents and students open the link and fill in the form, including file uploads, without an account or a sign-in. That's one difference from Google Forms, where Google's help page says file upload questions need a Google sign-in.
